I have a cattleya mounted on another one of these. I like the look. I got these online from a lady in the U.S. (I think Portland) a couple years ago. But sadly, just after I got mine she closed her business. I and several friends had all ordered just a couple each to see if we liked them and had planned to buy more. Anyone who does pottery could likely make something similar. I do find I am misting and watering them a fair bit but in summer especially I do fill the logs with clear water even if I do mist them. The base creates a little water receptacle for humidity.

Update: So I may have spoken too soon about this Tolumnia doing well. Since starting this thread, I've lost two of the six different plants. Not sure what's going on as the conditions haven't changed. Both of the offshoots deteriorated in two days.

The first, the leaves went yellow brown and then got these raised brown spots all over (felt like tiny Braille) before falling off. The second, the leaves went yellow in a day, and then fell off.

In general the roots don't seem to be greening up as well as they used to. Still some new root growth happening though.

Watering routine is to soak it each morning for a few minutes, or dunk it for 10 min. Mist throughout the day. It's always bone dry by night time--even with the bit of moss I tucked around the roots.

Anyone have any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong? Should I give up on the mount and pot it up? Humidity in house is typically 15-20%, temps 75-80 F. I'm afraid I'll lose what's left of the plant.

The bumps sound strange. I have heard they are magnets for scale, although haven't had a problem myself, touch wood. Have you checked that?

Well there are no other signs of bugs (and the bumps weren't bugs either). Wish I'd taken a picture of it. They were almost in a perfect pattern of raised brown dots the size of pin heads or slightly smaller.

The one that just died didn't have any spots. One leaf turned yellow and then they all fell off within a day.

The other plants don't have any spots though a month ago the cat chewed on the leaf tips of nearly every one. Perhaps that led to some sort of infection though I tried to disinfect right away.

I don't know, I lost one and I think I kept it too wet. They really like to be dry by night time. Maybe it got a little too wet in the crowns if you were soaking?? Maybe someone else will have some advice.
