Default Ansellia africana best grown mounted

Ansellia africana mounted on a tree in my garden.
The roots grow upward capturing falling leaves and other detritous which eventually rot and fertilising the plant.
I believe this species is best grown mounted, but please be warned, Ansellia africana can grow large, very large.
I have seen wild specimens in Africa with cane like pseudobulbs almost a metre long.
Bright light with a rest period is recommended, I've seen them growing in situ in full sun with little to no rain for 6 to 8 months.
Happy growing.

Those are outstanding, Owen. I can see why you indicated that they grow best mounted. Now I may experiment with one of mine--my only problem is determining what to do with the mount once the plant reaches adulthood. Really wonderful looking plants you have there.

Many thanks for your pictures and comments. Here in my German greenhouse I'll grow my 2 plants potted, but will keep a dry winter rest.

Thanks for the pictures, very helpful. I think ours were in baskets originally, but whatever it was they have overgrown it in all directions. There are now just metal hangers emerging from a large ball of roots.

Happy growing.
My wife asks - in your climate, when is the rest period?

Thanks!

Hello Steve, the rest period would be during our cooler winter period from May to September in the southern hemisphere. Temperatures are cooler and drier. Ansellia will start growth activity in spring, just before the start our rainy season / monsoon period.
As soon as you see growth activity start slowly to increase water and fertiliser which is pritty standard for all orchids. Don't allow the pseudobulbs to shrivel too much during the dry rest period. Hope this helps you.
