I have a Blubophyllum Fascinator that I've mounted on mopani wood. I want to use it in my terrarium, but every time I place it, it develops mold. I've treated with alcohol, and peroxide to no avail. It needs very high R/H, but I need to shake the mold. Any suggestions?
Did you boil the wood before use? I only ask because I placed a hunk of mopani wood in my freshwater aquarium after soaking it to leech the tannins out and the stuff formed a... Well let's just say it was gross, the stuff looked like snot.
I later discovered that mopani wood is not disinfected in any way before use and that it should be boiled.
I would think that submersing it and the plant in a solution of Physan (assuming the bulbo isn't sensitive to it) or Zero-Tol for about an hour might help.
I removed the plant, boiled the wood, and then re-mounted it to the same wood. It's in the tank now, and so far no mold! We'll see what happens in a few days!
I don't really know how absorbent it is. I haven't seen any swelling in the piece that I have and it has been in the tank for a year. Mopani wood is used to build houses in Africa, because the stuff is very oily and is termite resistant.
