Default Mounting mini Phal NOIDS on fallen limb with lichen

I browsed through a lot of threads and found out so far that wood wise I should be alright since it is either an oak or a pecan (lots of those here in Mississippi). It's wet from a recent rainstorm, so I'm not concerned with it being too dry.

My question was if I could set two small phal NOIDS that I recently rescued on it with relative success. I'm new to orchids (only a year into it and only killed one that was on it's way out when I found it, poor leafless thing) and was hoping to try mounting early on. I'm not sure of my humidity as I live in a dorm room (I'm pretty sure it's dry though). If they are still recouperating from there saturated sphag experience, could they adapt to growing on bark rather than in it?

Should be ok. You might want to scrub off the lichen

Some sphag on the mount might be helpful.

I put a little sphag around them, but left the lichen on thinking it may work like sphag and help hold moisture.

Nice to meet another Mississippian. I'm pretty much a noob, too - I suspect most of my orchids are NOIDS, too, with a couple of exceptions.

I too am interested in learning about mounting. I went picking around in the woods this past weekend and came home with what I hope will be good bits of wood - oak, with lichen on board, an interesting piece of hawthorn and a bit of sparkleberry limb. I'd love to find a piece of oak within my reach that already has the resurrection fern growing on it - I'm guessing that would look nice and be a suitable companion. In fact, I know it would look nice, having seen a very fine one done that way in the Mounting, pt 1 post.

Sorry, wasn't trying to hog your post, but I'm interested in the replies to yours as well, since you hit stuff I want to know.

Not a problem, Paschendale! I had to take apart my mounts, though, not due to the orchids, but the wood. I think the wood I got was really old or my environment was too moist because it started to mold very quickly, to my dismay. And due to the constrictions of my living space, I couldn't actually hang the mounts. They liked the moss growing on it, though, so I'm hoping that the moss will grow on the bark chips in which they are potted.

I think what I need to do is find a different area with different lighting if I am to use oak (I only have a South facing window) and actually hang the mount instead of putting it in a terrarium. That's my advice from a short lived experiment, Paschendale. I plan on trying again, though, since I would love to have my orchids mounted one day!
