Do you think I could mount an orchid on this?

I was in the garden and found this from the old pond filter (it was stuck between two rocks of like coloring). Instead of throwing it out, I was thinking about mounting an orchid on it. What do you think, could it work?

I might work. I'd check to see how much water it holds and for how long before deciding. This will also influence what you decide to mount on it

It holds a fair amount of water, but doesn't stay wet all day. I have a few ideas about what to mount. I have a bulbo. that I think may do well.

Thanks for the response. I think I just needed the extra encouragement because it's so different from what I normally mount on.

It resembles a material that is available for mounting plants in Europe. Apparently it works quite well but one person I know complains that the roots tend to grow through it and attach to whatever is behind it

I know of the material you are speaking, that was my inspiration behind using this. I hadn't thought about the fact that roots could grow through the material and attach to things around it, thank you for bringing this to my attention. This is exactly the type of feedback I was looking for!!

Nice idea! Bulbos really look great mounted. I tried having my ambroisia mounted but it just dried too fast. I now grow it in a shallow tray with a layer of moss. Now I don't need to worry.

Thank you! We used to have an ambroisia and we grew it mounted, it grew like a weed! Sadly, we lost it when we moved back to Michigan from N.C. We haven't replaced it yet, but it's in "the list".

A shallow tray with moss is a fantastic idea! If this material ends up drying too fast, I think I'll use your shallow tray idea and fill it with some water and set the mount in it.

Just a thought. You might want to make sure that this is not full of salts, perhaps by soaking it in hot water.

If it's firm enough, and if it's washed well as Ron suggests then I think it would work pretty similarly to epiweb/ecoweb.
