Why has this never occurred to me before????????
A totally DUH moment. SO, I have some orchids that need mounting. I have bought cedar planks online before, but I've just bought so many orchids lately that I'm behind in mounting. Today, my sister and I went to HD to see if they had cedar planks/scraps and, as I was walking past by the lumber, my sister says to me,
"Why don't you just buy the long pieces of lumber and have it cut to whatever specification you need?"
I don't know why it's never occurred to me to do that. I chose a nice piece of 8" wide cedar and had it cut into eight, 12 inch pieces. The lumber is thick (thicker than what I've purchased before, and well, let's just say it was the proverbial "why haven't I've ever thought of this before?"
I paid 20 dollars for eight foot-long cedar planks that are about 1/2 of an inch thick. They also had 6" inch wide cedar, but I wanted to mount some bigger divisions/orchids. The 6" wide cedar was way cheaper.
Of course, there are certain orchids that call for the gorgeous piece of burlwood, but I think I'm going to be buying these as my "basic mount" from now on. WHOA. I think Home Depot is going to have a shortage of cedar in the near future.

I thought that most of the wood at places like Home depot have usually been treated in one form or another? I'm not saying they are, but I also don't exactly think they had been cut and directly sent to the store either.

Nope it should be fine unless it is sold as 'treated' lumber but that is usually a different color and very noticeable. Just regular boards are just that, regular wood.....Jean

I would sand the boards just to be sure. They're usually sprayed with a water repellent sealer, which is invisible.

I like using cedar scraps its cheaper, I sand them first and then let them sit in water over night before I use them.

Maria. I went to HD and I got the cedar wood, 8' long, cut it and open the holes. I mounted 2 onc. I always have problems with the onc., but lets see how they are going to do, sometimes I tell my self: I'm to give up on you, but I do love onc. will let you know. norma

Good idea. Many more trips to HD in your future. Sometimes the obvious things elude us.

sounds like a good plan! cedar is cedar, and is naturally bug repellant, and isn't treated in any way....don't sand it, that will remove the little fibers that the roots love to cling to....good job maria!!

Cedar planks at "Lowes Depot" are not treated. Cedar doesn't need to be treated, that's why its so popular for fencing.
