Default Mounting questions.

I have two phals that seem to want to grow on top of their potting media instead of inside of it.....no matter what I try, and I am not talking air roots either. So would they be good candidates to mount on a piece of log from my tortoises cage that he no longer uses. to mount them on top of? What or how does one go about mounting an orchid...

mounting is my absolute favorite way of growing. Since most orchids for sale are epiphytes it suits them well. Essentially the roots will grow on the surface of the wood and may even penetrate the wood. It can be cheaper than potting I guess. You can use cork$$, Dried cholla cactus(pretty good), driftwood(free!!), tree fern, cedar planks, grapevine, Concrete blocks, etc. I use fishing line to tie on the plants. you gotta make sure they do not move or the roots will not attach.

One thing you can do and might work great for you is mounting on the outside of an inverted clay pot. If you drill hole in it even better. http://www.google.com.pr/imgres?imgu...QEwAw&dur=2279 While that is not my plant it is a great example of what mounting on clay pots can do.. Notice there is no medium which can rot. If you buy pots like in the picture you can just fill the pot w water and let the growing start. You could probably mount on broken pots too

I LOVE MOUNTING !!!!!!!! I LOVE ORCHIDS!!!!!!

Love those "jars" "jugs" or whatever they are in the picture. I'm gonna keep my eye out for something like that when I go out.

Oh yeah. That picture is not on an inverted pot but you get what I mean. you can mount the orchids on the outside of one of your $1 clay pots, invert it and set it in a tray of water. It will wick up moisture, keep the roots cool, raise humidity, and never rot.

I love that mounting on the clay pot, I must start to look for one in that shape and will definitely mount few babies on it! Thanks for sharing this

The olla (terracotta jugs) mounts haven't worked for me. Others have tried it with more success. Check this thread.

Unless it is cool and dark and humid, you will probably need to water every day.

Like a Pro!! Nice job. You probably will have to water them everyday or 2, I do.
