Default Smells like dog

A part of the mount (circled) smells like a dog.

Why?

I like dogs but don't want my chid to smell like one. The rest of the cork doesn't smell like anything. My nose may be messed up, I do have sinus issues but something is still going on. The area is somewhat deep and has lots of roots (looks healthy) imbedded. I've sprayed it with H2O2 fearing it might be bacterial.

Anyone have any idea of what's going on?

Do you own a large dog and how high is your plant off the ground?

Is there a piece of old moss there? Moss smells when it gets old and decomposes.

My question is: why are you smelling your out of bloom orchids?!?!?! lol

In all seriousness though, if the spot is small enough, you could just cut a chunk out of the stinky spot. Any roots caught in the cross fire will grow back later.

I have to say that in my 18 or so years of growing orchids that I have never heard of a mount smelling like dog!! lol

I admit it. I'm a media sniffer! Disgusting habit, I know.

There is a bit of debris of some kind, will try to get it.

It now smells like Safer insecticidal soap. It was suppose to smell like Neem but I grabbed the wrong bottle. It will smell like neem in a few days, after a couple of waterings.

That area is where nearly half of the plant is anchored.

Don't know how strong the smell is but if you can stand it for awhile, I'd just give it several long soaks or long waterings and flush it out.

You said there are a lot of healthy happy roots there and personally, I'd leave them well enough alone.

Cheers.
Jim

I suppose decomposing sphagnum moss does smell a bit like wet dog.

the hydrogen peroxide will do the trick....a couple of applications more and the funky smell will go away....the oxygen released will oxydize any bacteria or fungi that is giving off those odors
