Rock mount?

I have been dying to try mounting an Orchid. So I couldn't find a good hunk of wood for free, but I did find a large chunk of sandstone. I figured if people mount orchid's on clay pots, why not rocks? So I bought me a half dead Phal and tied it down with some moss to the rock and have the bottom of the rock sitting in water. Do you guys think this will work? I'll post a picture when I have time.

please post pictures...this sounds very interesting. Phals are found growing on trees in situ....there are orchids who thrive on rocks .... I have seen Neofinetia falcata grown on rocks

I would think that the temp of the rock would get too cold ( or too hot in the sun ) for a phal.....maybe stick a temp patch on the rock to see how the temp varies.

Right now it's just sitting in a pan of water on my porch. It's shaded all day long except for in the evening hours. It's been so stinking hot here in Michigan, that as long as it's not in the sun, it should stay pretty even temps as it doesn't get too cold here at night. If it doesn't die, it will come inside in the fall and live in my artificial grow cabinet where it's 80 degrees all the time. (trying to conserve some electricity!)

It should work and look very nice. A good place to find wood for mounts is the reptile section of many pet stores. You will have to show us the mount when your orchid is in bloom! I'll bet it will be beautiful!
