Cattleya acklandiae on Epiweb

I bought a small but many pseudobulbed C. acklandiae seedling this fall that was potted very tightly in sphag, and seemed quite happy. It has a great root system that goes straight down, but it started losing some leaves and others turning black. They werent mushy, so I assume it is some sort of fungal infection. I knew I would eventually mount it, so I decided to Physan the heck out of it and get it mounted for better air circulation. Because its a nice thick circular clump I didnt want to mount it on its side but facing straight out so the new growth could spread straight out all around it, but also didnt want to disturb its roots too much, which like I said, grew thick and straight down, which would mean either smooshing them into a new shape, or having the plant standing 2 inches out from the mount which didnt seem esthetically pleasing to the eye. While I was trying to decide the best option, I got the idea to cut a half circle in the middle of the epiweb, slide the roots through, and Voila! The plant sat perfectly on the mount, and since the back side of the mount still had the half circle attached, it sort of closed on the roots, securing them without having to tie the plant! I am so super happy with this mounting!!!! Cant wait for it to adjust and start growing on it!!
Also, I cut a slit in the top so I could slide the ID tag in!

Such a cutie!!! Good mounting job! I really like Epiweb, and I can get if pretty cheap from my OS. I have two 'chids on it, and I am sure there will be more in the future.

Cool idea! I think I am going to try that with a few mounted Phals. That looks like a Cloud's Orchids plant!

Definitely a Clouds plant! I really like how versatile epiweb is, and I find it easier for watering if they sit in a shallow bowl or reservoir so it can continue to wick up water after getting sprayed, and doesnt drip all over (I'm a windowsill gardener lol)

Very innovative! I got one of those from Cloud's this fall too! I re-potted mine into fine bark with a bit of moss and it seems real happy. Can I ask where you found Physan in Canada?? I would love to get some!

I actually bought mine on ebay from the US. Not sure if thats allowed, but it came across no problem thank goodness!

I should try again. I tried to order from Orchid Web and they said they don't ship to Canada. They have a lot of cites approved plants and seem to ship a lot so I was disappointed.

Try checking out ebay too, they might have something. I wish we had more access to the resources the US does, not to mention the plant selection!!

You have to order $2500 worth in order for them to ship outside the US. Anyone on ebay would likely be shipping illegally into Canada. Paperwork is very time consuming and detailed to get a permit.
