So, What would you mount on this?

I have a mount with multiple options of display and find myself musing on what should I dress it in?

Options currently are:
a) Cattleya intermedia var. coerulea.
b) Masdevallia lindenii (synonym of Masdevallia coccinea)

Thoughts? Suggestions?

In all honesty, I'd have to say I'd have issues mounting anything on that piece -- it is just too lovely in and of itself. (Yes, I know, I'm strange.) I actually have a couple of pieces of mopani that I originally got to use as mounts, but loved the woods' form too much to cover it up. Positions #2 & #3 I think show off this piece's character the best.

I agree with Paul, that is a cool piece of wood.
If I were going to use it as a mount, I would use the #3 postion and plant one of the smaller masdevallias on it. Just something to give the wood a spark of color and interest then set it in my front room.

I agree it is gorgeous, but alas I can not justify having it solely as an ornamental piece. Also my cat (pet not plant) wont use it to scratch and play with if it actually has plant on it

You'll be glad to hear you are not the only one who has said Masdevallias I am still mulling it over though. As pointed out by a friend the Catt will appreciate dryer conditions so may adjust better to being mounted.


I'm leaving the mounting till this Friday (with any luck) and will decide for certain then - Though I may just have to invest in, or find, another mount and just do both anyway (Fast becoming a big fan of Mounting Orchids)

I agree on Position 3! Not only does it have a natural pot shape but it can also be hung as well as stood.

.... I need more Mounts and Orchids!

Results are in! (Well some of them anyway)
After careful consideration - or something like that I have mounted the Catt on this mount. I am keeping a progress album which is here: ((Progress Album link to follow - previous link removed))

Hopefully one day I will have blooms but for now I will bask in the glory of new roots and growths

Nice mounting job! I think the Catt was a good choice, the masdie may have dried out too fast. How long ago did you mount it?

Still no buds, a couple of bud sheaths but no buds. The plant is well on it's way to engulfing the mount (which personally I like). The roots are certainly attatched now, and I have been picking away the old moss which seems to be redundant now.

Two photo's to show development againts the previous photos above. The thread you can see is a guide thread for those roots trying to head away from the mount. (photo's taken this very morning)
