UPdate - it's just starting to get more light up here in New England and I've started 'warming up' the phals to encourage new growth. There's some growth but nothing substantial enough to start sticking roots. I'm also thinking that I should have started with an Onc, with their more adventitious root system. May still try it.

For those looking for swamp sticks, there is a German company that has the same thing here:
Roellke Orchideen

The flat tube looked interesting to me.

Cheers.

after reading this thread i was very excited about the idea, and now i found the perfect pot.

i did the experiment, and it works great, i filled it with water and let it sit for a night, the next day it still had more than half the water, the outside was all "sweaty", and the clay felt very cool compared to the room temp.

now... i have a couple of doubts; if i fill it with rocks and then with the water ¿will it be fresher?¿will the water last longer?¿will create a suitable enviroment for fungus?, and the second is about the fertilizer: ¿if i fill it with water+fertlizer will it work or will the roots get burn?or should i prepare it a little weaker than the normal?

sorry about all the questions, and the bad english

Looks great! I use a dilute fert solution and fill the pot then keep the water level about the level of the mounted orchid. I've now found that plants with smaller roots than phals seem to do better at grasping on.

the talk in the other thread is that you should fill with only pure water because of build up issues on something that you cant really clean, and then dunk of spray the outside with fert whenever you need to.
