Neat! I've been thinking about mounting some orchids, though I'm not sure I have high enough humidity or the time to make sure the plants have sufficient moisture. Will definitely go to the pet store for the pretreated wood though, haha. Those are some very pretty pieces.

With regards to the direction of the roots, I'm not sure if there is a strict orientation. I do know that some orchids like to grow upside down (roots up). For instance, phals actually grow sideways or upside down in nature. Generally speaking, most people mount their plants right side up (roots down). Part of it depends on the plant, and part of it depends on your own aesthetic judgement, I suppose.
