How do you water them without marking your wall?

I tried once having a mount hanging in the house and even when I let it drain well after watering it still left damp marks on the paint

I was wondering the same! My mounts are hanging on a grid propped against a wall and I had to put a sheet of platic behind the grid to prevent having water dribble marks all over the wall since I spray them quite heavily. (not to mention the puddles on the floor until I thought to prop it up in a tray)

Do they get a lot of sun in the stairway?

I was wondering the same.

I just bought a nice 20 x 24 inch slab of EcoWeb from Ray and I'd love to do something like Sarinah did but I'm afraid of mucking up my wall.

I'm thinking what I should do is get a sheet of Formica that is the colour of the wall and put that behind the mounts.

Oops sorry, guys, somehow I missed all your questions!

I don't know, I haven't got them up against that wall for very long yet. Every three days or so they get a dunk in a bucket, then I hang em up again. Every to every other day when I walk past they get a spritz, I never hit the wall then. So far, no markings!

But, I'm no expert on this but I have an idea. On most of my walls there's latex paint (I have no idea if that translates right, but thats what we call it), which is watersoluble. But for moldy spots, or surfaces you want to be able to get wet/damp there is paint on turpentine basis (I believe). I used Alabastine in my bathroom for that purpose. I'm not sure if you guys get that brand. But anyway, getting it wet doesn't hurt it a bit. Did use two thick layers though.

And they get an hour or two max direct afternoon sun. For the rest it's indirect light.

hmm.......interesting - and nice mounts. I also use the bottle trick, but fill mine with sand. As I am really new to mounts, I was curious as to which method to mount. In that I mean - with the roots facing up, or with roots facing down ? I have 2 mounts as a start - and I have one of each method. I have seen both used. Is there a "proper" way ?

Neat! I've been thinking about mounting some orchids, though I'm not sure I have high enough humidity or the time to make sure the plants have sufficient moisture. Will definitely go to the pet store for the pretreated wood though, haha. Those are some very pretty pieces.

With regards to the direction of the roots, I'm not sure if there is a strict orientation. I do know that some orchids like to grow upside down (roots up). For instance, phals actually grow sideways or upside down in nature. Generally speaking, most people mount their plants right side up (roots down). Part of it depends on the plant, and part of it depends on your own aesthetic judgement, I suppose.
