I will say the orchids I have mounted or not in some sort of medium take much more work. Since I'm building a terrarium, I plan to move them all inside it for vacations to take advantage of the automatic dripping system I'm installing. Who knows, depending upon the level of light I get in there, along with temps, I might just move all the mounted and no medium orchids in there and leave them.

here's a pic of my setup. i arranged my plants according to their light (bright/right, shade/left) and humidity requirements (wet/bottom, dry/top). plants receive bright light in the mornings, and shade in the afternoon. packing the mounts close together allows for the ambient humidity to rise.

Very nice setup amphirion! I have something very similar to yours. The hardest thing I deal with it keeping them humid enough. I give them a dunk in water everyday ( I use tap water with no issues!) and then will spray though out the day as needed. I actually just attached some more moss today hoping to keep the moisture up.

@wjs2nd: great minds think alike i guess.
as for watering, i just get lazy and throw the whole rack into the shower for a minute or two.

My two cents--- I have Brassavola cucullata and a baby Blc. both mounted on pieces of firewood from my dad's woodpile. They both have a bunch of osmunda wrapped in fishing line around the roots. And, both are doing REALLY well. I put them outside this summer, and they grew like crazy, despite the intense heat wave! They don't seem to suffer at all during the winter months... I still dunk them daily in diluted fertilizer and spray them alot (spraying during day AND night!). But, both types like a bit of drying out from day to day. I haven't had blooms yet (the Brassavola MAY bloom soon... not sure yet...) but its looking hopeful! I think the Blc. is still WAYYY to small, and I'm fearful I've selected too small of a log for it! Good luck with your plants!

I have one round log that appears absolutely PERFECT for mounting a plant, really rough bark and all! I've been saving it for a while for that 'perfect' mounting orchid... I'm thinking an Oncidium or some type of small chunky Cattleya... or B. nodosa. Any other ideas??? Help me decide guys! What should I choose?!?!?!?! AHHHH!!!!! :-D

I have about a dozen that grow indoors year round. I have been having great luck with it. I grow under lights in front of a west facing window. I have a tray that catches the drips. My humidity is about 50-60%. I soak them for about half an hour once a day or every other day. They do just great. My holcoglossum is about to flower. Also have a phal, lasiochillum, gastrochillus, a couple of small catts, harealla, frostii, sedirea japonicus, and a few I can't remember the names off hand. I love the mounts. They seem to do way better for me. I am in Wisconsin so no chance of them staying out for the winter. I use tap water (well water) with no trouble. I wish I could mount them all.

Looks very Cool! How long have you had them all hung up like this? Do you then leave them to 'dry off a bit ' in the shower?

At least count I had 51 mounted orchids. Mostly catts but also dens, phals, angs, and a few other odds and ends.

The biggest challenges w/mounted is always going to be proper hydration and the fact that mounted plants require a good deal more work than potted ones. Just the way it is.

After several years of trying different things I came up w/a rack system that combines both horizontal hanging and vertical hanging spaces...all underneath HO T5 units. For watering, my husband build me catch basins out of pvc and plastic that I can tear down and store when not in use. The catch basins allow me to water in place and the water drains into 5 gal buckets. It sure beats the heck out of carrying everything to the sink/shower.
