mounting Dendrob & Phal onto 1 large mount
Default mounting Dendrob & Phal onto 1 large mount

I have a collection of dendrob & Phal (6) that are doing remarkably well on my window sill behind my sink. Unfortunately, i believe most have outgrown their pots and i have no space for larger pots. I`ve have been wanting to mount them onto something and hang them over the sink in the same window for while now. Fear is keeping me from moving forward. I was thinking of either using large branch of wood (i`d love birch) about 4 or 5 inches in diam. or a pvc pipe totally covered in cork (about 4ft long) suspended in front of the window. Is this a bad idea? am i being a chicken? any better ideas or tips? Id hate to try this and have them die.

You mounting ideas sound ok, I would wait untill spring to do this though. Warmer weather and new root growth is better when changing the environment.

Cool idea! One of the AOS magazines a few months ago had an article about someone hanging large cork oak logs in their GH and covering them with mounted plants. It looked spectacular! Doing a mini version in your kitchen would be pretty awesome.

Not sure about the birch, I've never used it for mounting and don't know how well it holds up over time. I do know the black birch branches and logs I see fallen in woods around my area always seem fairly rotten, though I have no idea how long they've been sitting there... The birch could be pretty heavy, too, esp. for a log of that diameter.

Cork on PVC might work well and ought to be very durable. The big box pet stores in my area often carry cork tubes (for reptile use, I guess) that could be slid over a PVC pipe and fastened together.

Bear in mind that such an arrangement will likely be hard to take down and water, so you'd probably need to mist or water in place, which shouldn't be too much of an issue if it's over your sink. Dens and Phals also tend to have somewhat different cultural needs, so you might need to do a lot of spot watering and tailoring of micro-habitats with sphagnum moss and the like.

Can't argue with what Joann said about timing of mounting. I've always had better success mounting plants when their roots are in active growth, which can vary a lot from genus to genus. Might be a good project to build up and add things to over time. Keep us posted on your progress, it's a great idea!

Glad you decided on the tubes. Birch is a VERY soft wood and would not last well. Oak maybe.

Personally, I would not mount a phal and a den on the same piece of cork, as they have substantially different cultural needs, and you'd end up compromising one or the other - or both.

As far as mounting techniques go, I suggest "fanning" the existing root system out of the surface, covering it with some sphagnum, and then anchoring the whole mass to the mount.

I have used fishing line to tie them on, strips of my wife's old panty hose, etc., but have come to favor coconut husk fiber. I just lay it over the moss and roots, then use a staple gun to tack it down on both sides. Once the roots grab the mount, I just pull the staples.

if it is the common dendrobium-phalaenopsis we are talking about being mounted with a phal. i would advise against it. they have different light needs. but a few dendrobiums could be nice

i dont know what type they are.. they appear on my table at Easter and mothers day from various relative who picked them up at various grocery stores. The tag says Dendrobium or Phal.. .. opsis.. both types are together on the window sill and doing fine.. i think.. the are all flowering/budding right now.. (even though its -15C outside and we`re under a foot of snow). they keep these flowers til about february/march. then flower again in the summer. The dendrobiums have.. i little.. plantlettes growing of the main plant.. i forget what they are called...so scared to cut them off... but they have always been on the same window and have always bloomed together... thats the only reason i thought i`d mount them together. The newest one is about a year old and the oldest is about 5 years now. never had a problem.. other than a scaley bug thing that took some effort to get rid of. its a north-west facing window.. only direct sun it gets is after 4pm in the summer... none in the winter. maybe they do even better in a brighter window..
