Rosie, there are alternatives that use the same concept:

Invert a terra cotta flower pot and silicone glue it to a water tight tray. Fill through the hole, mount on the side,

Do something similar using an unglazed clay sewer pipe. Most decent "real" building supply places have them (as opposed to the "big box" stores).

One of the issues with growing on the outside of a ceramic body is matching the porosity with your conditions. Some are very porous, so the water leaks through too quickly, but if you are in a particularly dry area, that's good. That same one in a humid area would be "runny". Of course, the opposite it also possible - it does not pass enough water to keep the plant well cared-for.
