Fishing line is usually clear so not distracting ... I would simply keep it there.

I would take it off because the roots may grow thicker and be sliced by the fishing line. I tend to keep my fishing line on for ten months or longer depending on how fast the roots grow. Leaving the line on can still cause damage IMHO.

You can remove the line once the plant is nicely attached. If you have moss on the mount, you may want to keep the line so the moss doesn't fall off when watering.

I always wonder this, especially on some mounts that have unattractive ties.
I usually gently remove it and if at any time in the process the plant seems to not be holding on as well as I thought I just re-tie it. So far they've always been quite stable.
That reminds me... there is one I have that I really must remove the ties from. Horrid looking ties and the plant has roots coming out the back of the mount so it must be secure by now

So, if you should need to put new moss on (as in the plant wouldn't survive without some moss on the mount), I suppose you just remove as needed and put more fishing line on with a small amount of sphag? I have one that looks like it's attached nicely, but the moss is horid looking (old).

Hi Paul, my moss can look funky too sometime but usually, if you plant is established well, the moss will stay on the mount with no fishing line around it. If I have a spot that looks so so and their isn't much moss there I just add some more. Actually, I just had to do that this morning. I'll just wrap some new line around to hold the moss till the roots grab on to it.

I don't believe that a well mounted plant needs the moss around the roots at all, as I've seen many photos of mounted orchids just bare root and doing well. Also photos of orchids in situ often shows their roots clinging to tree bark and being able to survive quite well. Of course, they would certainly need a more continual moistrue supply then if/when they were covered with damp moss.
Cheers,
Tony
