Here is the Den Agg on my "orchid tree".....
Here's the tree...
David, if you wait for roots, you'll miss an opportunity for them to attach. It's one of those things you have to have faith on.

Hi Swamper,
I have one mounted on a small vanda plaque. It's been on there since I bought it 3 years ago. They grow slowly but it loves the mount and is wrapping around. 9 spikes this year. Another I put on tree fern and just took it off after over a year. It didn't like .. so I mounted on my new driftwood. I have another kind of rooting in a tree fern small basket. That one is a wait and see. My advice is go with the wood and no moss. Mine gets fertalized 1x week and watered everyday hanging along with my vandas. Hope this helps.

Brady, that is an awesome tree. If I ever find a driftwood that big I will have myself a tree like that as well.
Lorraine, thanks so much for your input. I sure wish you hadn't said yours didn't like the tree fern either. I mean what's not to like? It looks perfect for it. If you were an orchid wouldn't you just love that mount? LOL Seriously though, maybe I will change it back to a wood mount. That would be a record in effort for me.
Next thing is...you grow in the same light as your vandas? The seller told me they like more shade and to grow it with the catts.
Man I should have just come here first.

Here is a picture of the den with the vandas...and another of half the guys on that side. They get South and West sun in the pool enclosure.

Mine is growing with my catts but it is at the edge of the shade cloth and does get a little direct sun although that is still under a overhanging oak limb and its spots of sun that kind of moving when the breeze moves lhat limb around a bit ....it has two new leads with nice big leaves already after just a month. And this is a lows bag baby but did look very healthy when I got it.its in very chunky large grade bark that it came in.Watered every day and fertilized two or three times a week

I've had one of these for several years.
It has been mounted on a piece of cedar fencing for the past 2 years and this is the first season that it has really put out roots and tried to attach itself. It is a slow grower but it is healthy and blooms well every year.
What I've found that works for me:
1. I kept moving it around at first (different pots) and they really don't like that. Put it one place and leave it.
2. It likes lots of moisture during the growing season. The more I water, the more roots there are.
3. I have to keep the mount well watered also or the roots won't attach.
4. Attach it securely while you're waiting for it to adapt. Every time I dislodged mine it seemed to have to start all over again.

Thanks for all your help guys. I have other dends growing in the same area as my vandas but I followed the sellers advice. I moved it to a more sunny area last night. I will wait a week or so and move it with the rest of my vandas. No wonder I love vandas they would have grabbed onto that mount tight by now, maybe even have keikis
BTW I know it was happy in the pot it came with but I just like mounts. Also my bulbs look like they need some more water too. Actually they look older and wrinkled but that just sounds wrong.

Lorraine your pool area looks just like mine . Except I used eletrical piping instead of PVC if that's what you used.

Mine is potted, but 1. and 2. are VERY true!
Found out the hard way that these guys RESENT being repotted. Took a few months, but mine is finally putting out a new lead and lots of roots now that I water it more often, and have added liquid seaweed to my fert regimen.
More sun, and more water, and my bulbs plumped up significantly.
