There are flasks out and about, have been for years. I think mericlones are popular these daze.
Talk with the Florida guys and read the book : Orchid Thief. Those were the crowd I ran with in the mid eighties.Fantastic orchid in it's own environment.
Growing condition = Ghost orchid environment.
They demand highly stagnant air and extreme humidity. VERY unique. They and mosquitoes co-exist wonderfully.

I don't know where they were purchased but little, tiny ghost orchid roots may be ordered from Oak Hill Nursury. Sundance Orchids in Ft. Myers, Fl orders a bunch from Oak Hill for special sales. They do not, however, grow them. The lifespan of those little ghosts is not real positive, but people on this board have various levels of success and share their progress. I mentioned in another thread that Keith Davis has grown a beautiful ghost for which he received an Orchid Society award. I think he lives in N. Carolina, though I may be wrong.

they are related to the Angreacums, which are related to Vandas. if you look at the flowers you can see a strong resemblance to the Angreacums ![Big Grin](http://www.orchidboard.com/community/images/smilies/new/biggrin2.gif)

I thought I would keep this thread alive about Ghost Orchids.
I have one that in Sep 2011 sprouted 5 new roots, and they are doing well. The environment is tough to control and keep ideal for them. I am experimenting with some different things to get them to grow faster. Currently the largest root is growing an average of .75" per month.
I am about to start making inquiries by calling Floridian wood choppers to see if I can get some bald cypress bark up here - none of the ideal mediums are grown here in Charleston, WV. and it is critical I get the right bark before purchasing any more Ghost Orchids.
I must admit, they are not for the faint of heart, they demand treatment above and beyond any other orchid I have, and I frankly find it difficult to maintain the environment and keep the other orchids happy.

No need to call the swamp loggers. OFE sells cypress totems. They're about 2 ft long - you can cut them to any size you want.

I'm not positive that cypress is the best substrate to try to cultivate these orchids. I use cypress for some orchids because it is locally abundant, but the bark is very smooth. A local grower grows three diffrent species of Dendrophylax beautifully using live oak with a little native epiphytic moss. The live oak has is rough, so it gives the roots places to burrow into. The moss provides extra moisture, bit will not keep the plant overly wet.

share share share
Would you be willing to share the info on the grower in question? I would love to talk to them, or email.
