Default This is a Survey....which phal seedling to mount?

Hey Folks,
So I have 2 blank bark pieces. They are fairly small, roughly 4x6". I have 5 phal seedlings from Oak Hill Gardens. They are amboinensis, bastianii, intermedia, and 2 schillerianas. I am definitely going to mount one of the schillerianas. My question is, out of the 3 others (amboinensis, bastianii, intermedia) which should be the other one I should mount?
Thanks in advance for any input on this. I will probably mount more later but want to start with just 2.
Thanks,
Dan

Phal intermedia is the smaller one out of all of the ones you mentioned. I would mount those on a 4" x 6".

If adult size doesn't matter, then go ahead with any of them.

Any or all will be fine, but, the schillie gets to be a big plant......leaf length of 14" to 16". You might want a large piece of cork for it.

Let us see your final results.

Thanks for the responses....so if I mount the schilleriana on one of these small mounts and it does well, will it be very difficult to remount it onto a larger mount later? Should I just order a larger one to begin wth? Thanks again!

Yes, order a larger piece for the schillie. As Al said, they get huge FAST.

I purchased this schillie from Oak Hill last Jan as a very small seedling. This is the mount about six weeks ago

The leaves measured 7".

The ambo is a slow grower and the intermedia is a small(er) grower so the largest piece of cork might be suitable for them.

I would save the smaller piece for one of the very small growers - lobbii, chibae, parishii, hainanensis, honghensis.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Brooke

Dan, I can only tell you what I would do (and did) and that is to mount it on a large piece of cork.
Schilleriana roots love to attach themselves to the bark and it would be difficult to move it up to a larger one. You could mount on a small piece and, when time, put the whole piece of cork with plant on a large piece but the "looks" will be odd. You might want to visit PetCo. In he reptile dept. you might find the right size and not have to wait for an order to arrive.........They also have some very nice pieces of Grape Vine (roots). These make beautiful mounts. A little pricey though but if you take into consideration shipping charges it might balance out to about the same.

Brooke, would you post your pic of your schille? It's a beautiful example.
