Yes, you can take cutting from a vanilla plant and they will grow fairly easily, with the right conditions.

That's where both of my plants came from, out of two separate cutting, one about 6"-8" long and the other about a foot or so. I started mine in pots with a soil/bark mix and they grow like weeds.

Oh that's so exciting!!! In that case, maybe I will be able to get my hands on one!
Has yours ever bloomed? I hear the flowers only last for a couple days

I started them late last spring, if memory serves and they are now probably 3' tall, at the shortest. One actually broke off a piece and I stuck it in the soil next to the other and off it went.

No blooms yet. I'm not sure but I think they bloom in the spring so I am hoping for something this year, maybe. It's been a cooler winter for us and I keep them outside - they look like they are dormant, if that's possible.

I don't think the blooms last even a couple days... but the foliage looks nice.

Hey there,

When you said "we keep them outside" as in, in winter, I looked over and saw that you're in Central Florida. Lucky! I'm in Southern Ontario...we had two weeks of spring-like weather (2-3 degrees celsius), but now it's -15C again

Yes, Vanilla cuttings take a little while to start growing again (after they have been cut), but they take off when the new growth starts. I have extra divisions of a couple different Vanilla species. So if you don't get one, I'm always up for a trade...if you'd like.

Oh, and I believe the blooms only last for the day, from what I've heard.

supposedly you can. When I took my vanilla out of the pot it came in to put in on a pole, there were a few loose cuttings. I have planted then in several small pots for family members and so far they seem to be healthy. It has been about 3 weeks. Worth a try.
