oh, what I ment was use an already cut branch in good condition and then holow it out with a drill. I thought that this would lessen the risk of my phal drying.

Scrach that idea. I found a nice branch with a fork in it that I will try to mount the Phal. I hope it will look good.

Be sure to strip the bark off. It tends to fall off on its own just as the roots begin to take hold!!

I agree with Steve and Ron. Personally, I have mostly cork mounts, but do also have a variety of driftwood, tree fern, cedar and other mountings, including seashells. I use fishing line, but loosely tied to avoid strangling the roots.

Hanging phals upside down or at a sideways angle is a good idea to avoid the rot. My first transplant phal was a Mini Mark Holmes, and now I have all my Potinaras and most of my mini-catts mounted this way. More time needed for more frequent watering, but if you have adequate moisture and humidity, excellent results!

Hi Ottercottage! How do you care for your mounts? Do you have them in a case, a greenhouse, or do you grow them outside during summer and keep them in the house during winter? You probably have slightly higher humidity than I do, but I'd like to try mounts. Since you live in about the same climate, I'd love to pick your brain!

And Paleofreak, I do apolize for sort've hi-jacking this thread.

My only concern is that there will not be enough surface for the roots to grow on. I could be wrong, but I think the mount should be a little larger in diameter. And what is it that you have wrapped around the moss? My only concern is that this would keep roots from being able to grow freely. Is it at least a breathable material?

I think that the diamiter of the mount is prety good ( mabe slightly on the small side). The meterial is just a fine mesh even though the pic looks diffrent
