The evaporation is also a factor to consider and a slow leaking tube stays wet enough if it is enclosed into a small vivarium/case.

Thanks! I hope we hear back from Jesse!

The vase is fill with RO water and placed in a small aquarium. There is a compure vent going on 24/7. The whole thing is placed on a windowsill and needs no additional light.
The plants have been mounted for 2 weeks and look good so far.

The photos are made 1 week after the start of my project.

Golden: that is so cool that you're trying this too! Looking really good! Keep us posted on your progress!

What Magnus is describing is exactly were I was at with my SwampStick's, but I was flooded with complaints and have since adjusted kiln temperature and a few other variables.

That being said I'm fairly certain I can duplicate the "recipe" and create a tube that can either sit in water and pull water up into the ceramic, as well as cap the base of the tube and keep it porous enough to weep; or what kind of looks to me like beads of sweat or condensation on the outside surface.

As the water level drops, the hydraulic pressure lessens, as does the volume of water beading up on the surface of the mount.

I'll just have to make a few and test them.

gmdiaz, what are you thinking in regards to the height of the tube? And you would want a base in it right, so you could fill it?

I'll make one to your specs and we can see how it does.

Here are a few photos of a custom job done earlier this year. The tubes and base were hand thrown on the wheel, fired and then re-fired to glaze the base. We created two of these for this customer

This was a longer process as everything was hand built and cost was at a premium. But now with the extruder, labor is reduced to a minimum.

These photos were sent about 2 months after he got the viv's set up.

Hi Jesse,

I'd like one about 6" wide x 16" tall, capped, so it could be filled with water, with a tray. The one above looks great!

That would be a good size to test. . .I think!

PM and let me know the cost and where to send payment and we can give this a GO!

growinhydro, those claytubes looks very good!

But remember that the pressure increase with height and you get more leaking with higher pressure! Therefore the capillary effect that suck up water the top part is very important. The drainage tubes used in Sweden is very good at this.

I can have 3-4 cm of water in the bottom of the tube and still the top has enough moisture.

This is a promised picture of my newly started nano-vivarium

Jesse do you think you could ship one of those to Canada?

More specifically, do you think the journey would break it?

Kyle

HI Magnus
Did you put on purpose some dirt on the clay tube in order to stimulate the moss growth?

wow, Magnum.. That a realy cool way to grow minis... is there any website where one could buy those pipes?

I had bought some clay-water-tubes from Roelke ochideen but was not happy with the dripping of them. The large pot lost to much water and the small did not leak any water at all..

Sorry I thought I saw that you wanted it 8" tall, my mistake. I'll extrude a 16" tube tomorrow and wheel throw a base plate for it; so the base will look like the ones in the photos I posted above

I can at least share a photo of what I made for you today. This is the 8" long tube from the 6" die, slurried to a base that I will trim back flush to the tube as an end cap. I'm going to keep this one to play around with

Here's the photo:

Hi Kyle, I could definitely ship one to Canada, and am fairly confident I can pack it so it would stand the best chance at making it there in one piece.

I would insure the package so there is really no risk. And if it breaks, I can make you another one and we can try again.

If I double box it I give it a 95% chance at making it to you intact!

Let me know or PM what you would like me to build for you and I'll get started on it tomorrow evening. Once I get it built I can get a weight, and give you some sort of idea of what it may cost to ship.

If it is just too much to ship, I can re-claim the clay so there is no material loss on my end, just a little time; which is what I call practice

Talk with you soon,
Jesse

Thanks Magnus!

Out of curiosity, how are you capping and sealing the bottoms of those drainage tubes?

Cheers!
Jesse
