I had never even thought about mounting a phal but now that you've planted the idea...

I have 2 phals given to me recently that weren't doing too good but are now on the road to a nice recovery.
I should be able to mount one of them come springtime

Hummm thoughts of a large mount display(Wendy's got my thoughts running) with phals...active roots a huge bonus. Noting I grow indoors weathering the plants are not a huge issue in Florida. Time to plot and plan. Thanks everyone for your knowledge and ideas.

I can just see it now -- I'll have to bring in a section of a large maple tree (a log) and stand it up in front of the window for the Phals

I'm serious

If I had the space I would do that. I just think it would be the coolest thing ever. Seriously, in Northern Michigan it makes NO sense whatever. If I were in, say, St. Pete, I would try it. In the mean while, I'll rely on my current methods.

I have seen photos of phals growing on cement/concrete walls which I think is awesome.

I killed my first ever [generic] white phal by being lazy and not checking to keep the crown dry and it got rot

I'm now waiting to see if it might throw out a keiki..

I think a rule for Phal growers should be to NEVER water from above. More people rot out the centers of their Phals than any other type of problem. I was recently in a 'big box store' (IKEA) where they had many displays of Phals (yes I succumbed) and most had rot already established in the crown from clerks watering habits. I selected one that was clean.

Yep!!!! I had even read about crown rot before and I know what creates it too- very bad parenting on my behalf!

On the plus side it was only a no name phal and now that I have experienced the rot I will know better and do better next time.

I also have another no name phal going really well and I'm being very careful not to repeat the mistake.

Damian, I have some of my phals in pots and after a heavy misting or watering I use a papertowel to blot the crown and have not had a problem with crown rot or you can use cotton. My phals that are mounted are up and down as Tindo stated in an earlier post.
