I will preface in that I am new to orchids and very new to this forum so I haven't read all the entries. This has probably been mentioned before.
I have seen orchid mounts hanging free, on a frame of mesh such as chicken wire, on a wall...however I have noticed pictures of them sitting on what looks like a plate stand. What are the cautions for this? Are there any other ways someone like me in an apartment can handle mounted orchids. I have avoided them so far.

Yes you can grow mounted orchids just fine in an apartment if you have the window space to provide them. Here's a pic of mine I have mini orchids and seedlings mounted as well as blooming-sized mature orchids mounted (and others as well). Hope the picture gives you some hints of what you can do.
Ross,
All look great and healthy but I know my wife would object to something like that. Thanks though, I might get away with a couple hanging from the curtain rod.

Nick, try a small chunk of 1/2" x 1/2" hardware cloth from Home Depot. Just hang that with small wires from coat hangers and then hang your mounts on the window side. That's the big area to the upper right of my display. Good luck.
