Conform to convention? Ha!
Both were PiA. I removed the one off the slate slab and mismanaged the olla (along with a good chunk of my collection).

Edit for FYI: the olla pic was side-ways until I pulled down the attachment and clicked on Manage Attachment and clicked on the pic in question. The slate one is probably also side-ways but doesn't really matter.

On the previous edit: I don't know how I did that after all, couldn't repeat it.

I am researching the best non-wood mount for Haraella retrocalla (I have an ambitious plan for a tiny terrarium) and in a previous post you mentioned Conch shells- do you have any advice or guidance with mounting to shells?

Should I be looking at smaller orchids for a potential shell mount?

Pick a mount with some tooth to it so the roots can grasp onto it. The rough outside of a shell, not the smooth nacre.

When mounting the most important thing is that the roots don't move while getting established. Tie it tightly with a band of pantyhose for firm and even support. Leave it alone; don't pull it out to worry about it 12-20 times a day.

I have some rupicolous laelias growing on a rock mount! They're quite happy and I'm planning on mounting some more on rocks, since it's so much nicer than pots!

Welcome to the Orchid Board! Those look fantastic! That looks just like how some rupicolous Laelias and Sedums grow in Brasil and Mexico!
