okay, that damn picture has tainted my mind and i spent about 45 minutes burning through 6, 18v batteries and two masonry bits and i am about half way to where i want to be
i don't know if i can pull off the various elements i will need to make this work but that picture has simply stuck me in the imagination and taken root

they are not great for long term mounts.
i have found that the coir is great but the shells don't really hold up for longer than a year or two while my good 'ol cedar board lasts a LOOOOOONG time

Those look great DC! I'm actually so impressed you were able to drill through those without them crumbling to dust
Since pings have such little root systems, sometimes you can find lava rocks with pits and craters big enough to fill with a little sand/peat, then just sit the ping on top and don't touch it for a few weeks while it takes root

i was not technically drilling i suppose....i made a meager investment a while back in a set of diamond coated, carbide hole saw bits...so i used the 1" and kept the sprayer going as if i was cutting glass....surprisingly easy
these pieces of lava rock have spent the last decade plus being walked on in my back yard landscaping so they are extra "hardened"
