Thanks for posting this! I was thinking about buying some of these pots but I'm hesitant with the international shipping. It looks like these might not be the best solution for my Masdevallias. Thanks for the info!

For Masdevallias, I think you can get a similar effect (root cooling) by just using sphagnum in terracotta pots. In fact, you can get even more cooling by placing the whole thing in a slightly larger terracotta pot. That way, you have an air apace, that is also humid. I think there's a formal name (and product) that does this, that I recall in a discussion some months ago. Perhaps someone who recalls that will jump in.

I think the point was to have a self watering pot instead of a pot that cools the plant but if they start going mouldy thats no good. In the article about them it mentions flour is used in the clay baking process which will always make them prone to go mouldy to me.

I have always wanted to use a regular terracotta pot - I don't see why it needs to be made with added flour - but it would take up too much space here. If you start having a chunky clay pot with a plant attached to the outside of it it would take a lot of space.

Ps: that air conditioner thing is not porous and would not be the same.
