I built the plexiglass box before finding some large (12" diameter) cylindrical glass vases. I just put about 2" of LECA in the bottom, keep the water to 1", and put plexi over the top. White LED floodlight from above.

Not the best, but adequate for the winter.

I have some of those vases. I'll give it a try next winter. Might also help with keeping the heat up a bit. Most of my my orchids are cool or intermediate growers, and the Tols appear to struggle in winter months. Everyone has to be in same place and get along.

Small 5 gallon aquariums also work very well.

Great idea. I'm doing a different project with a 55 aquarium, and perhaps I can just incorporate some Tol's into it and see how it goes!

I am impressed. Hope to see pictures of your DIY plexiglass box.

Hard to photograph well, and not much to see - simply 5 pieces of plexi glued to form a 12" x 12" x 18" tall box.

That's very nice, Ray! Lucky you to live in a climate where something like this is possible. Do you think you'll have any trouble moving it when the time comes? It's hard for me to tell from the photo just how big and heavy it might be, but it looks very sturdy!

It's about 3'-6" tall by about 2' across, and I think the whole thing comes in at around 50 pounds or so, as it has a concrete base in the glazed bowl. I just had to move it in, then out again after Hurricane Dorian.

I might have to put it on a wheeled base...
