Any of the following will work well: Garlic, lavender, oregano, Peppermint, Penny Royal, Corsican mint, Rue (Ruta graveolens due to its extreme bitterness), and Artemisia absinthium (another bitter one--birds love the leaves for their nests but everything else avoids it). Good luck!

I don't think any of the flexible polymeric materials will work, as rodents will chew right through it. Hardware cloth is probably your best bet.

Does the Gigavent manufacturer have any suggestions? Other people with their product have faced this issue.

McGyver suggests laying the hard ware cloth on cardboard and painting a scene on it, then hanging it so it will be pretty. Remove cardboard and hang hardware cloth...

I like the idea of contacting the manufacturer and asking them for advice.

Mint certainly doesn't seem to deter the mice, come to think of it. Penny royal grows wild throughout the back yard and grapefruit mint and spearmint is in my butterfly garden but we still have to set out traps for mice ever autumn and stuff holes with steel wool.

Gigavent makes the opener, not the part that actually opens and closes.
