I like the plant idea. Peace lilies (Spathiphyllum) would be great for this. They won't mind the low light under the bench at all. They use a good bit of water, therefore they should keep the humidity up.

If the active humidification of a swamp cooler is insufficient, the relatively passive evaporation from the floor or plants is not going to be much help.

Misting gives a lot more surface area for evaporation than does a floor... Do so under the benches to avoid rots.

Do you, by the way, have exhaust fans running at the same time? If so, try turning them off, and rely on the swamp cooler to push the hot air out.

We figured since grass can grow under some shade trees, and we put in mixed shade and sun type seed, that it would be OK. but it could be why it doesn't do so well.

Artificial turf may be next! I would just like some pavers or something myself (sigh).

What about dichondra or violets? I have seen both used as lawns, and they tolerate a lot less light than does grass. Dichondra seed is readily available in the US.
