Several updates. The trench is done! Wiring and water is buried, tested, and back filled. That was exhausting, but I saved $118 plus tax.

We have finished adding the new circuit breakers, but they are disconnected as we work on the outlets (safety first). We added a freeze safe outdoor faucet as a supplemental line. This means that I don't have to drag a hose to water my vegetable garden.

We decided to run the conduit up through the ridgepole to wire the lights and we are going to add a solar powered motion detector light on the outside. Things are really moving along now. We ordered the fire bricks for the RMH and they came tonight. Unfortunately the Mfg didn't package them very well and some were damaged. Luckily ATG (a division of Lowes) has on line chat until 10pm Pacific. They placed a replacement order for the broken ones. Now if the guy would call me back about the bricks for the thermal mass.

Here are a few pictures.

I'm so tired that I'm having trouble typing. LOL. 1000 bricks in two truckloads. Then I got a wild hair and decided to clean the driveway. Hubby is still outside working on the wiring. Now that we have the brick, I can start working on the rocket mass heater. Tomorrow I'm going to lay it out and try to get a working test.

A few pictures.

Well the skies decided to open up and rain today so not much to do. So we decided to rough together the RMH! We got it basically clamped together enough for a test and got a burn. We think the burn chamber needs to be longer. Not sure yet. Will have to test it a few times. Here are a few pictures and a video link.

Everything looks nice

Fact is I am dealing with code and deed restrictions on a home where I would like to build a greenhouse. Its quite prohibitive when you have to have engineered approved drawings in triplicate for all structural electrical and mechanical additions.

home owners insurance wont accept responsibility for any damages to your home or others caused by any un-permitted/unlicensed installation or upgrade of any electrical mechanical or structural work...

so I am not prepared to accept responsibility for anything Im building yet.

looks good

Such a bummer when the city requires a bunch of stuff because a few bad "apples" spoiled it for everyone.

Here, an accessory building under 25' tall does not require a permit for the structure itself. The code was amended to include these greenhouses with the shed descriptions.

Regardless of that, we are following basic residential code anyway. Just because the permit is not required doesn't mean that some people don't use good common sense.

Bearing that in mind: We know that this building isn't covered by insurance. Most insurance companies do not cover accessory buildings. Our insurance company didn't even cover our old garage that was built original with the house.

The code for a 25' high building (ours is 10'8") is a 5' setback from the neighboring property line. Ours is at 5' exactly.

Because we tied into an existing outdoor faucet for irrigation, this is exempt (because it can be disconnected and drained). However, we dug down to 16" and added 2" of fill to make an 18" depth so we more than met any requirement on that part.

For the electrical, we already had a permit because we are adding circuits for our kitchen remodel and the underground greenhouse wiring was added to the original request. Of course, we used Sch 40 PVC to protect the wiring and properly connected to the panel with the bushing protectors.

The RMH is like an outdoor fireplace only much safer because you don't leave it burning unattended. It stores the heat in a thermal mass, which releases at a slow rate. At any rate, we are over 100' from any residential structure and the one Crepe Myrtle tree overhanging will be trimmed back to our fence line. We will also install 2 fire extinguishers just in case.

I think we have the safety part covered.

Well we are finally swimming out from the massive rain we had this past week and weekend. Reports are that we got from 6 to 10 inches of rain. My redneck rain gauge shows 10". This wheelbarrow was empty on Friday evening and the photo was taken on Sunday morning at 11am when the rain finally stopped.

We have power in the greenhouse! It is off right now while we finish the hookups, but we tested it and it works. We also did extensive testing of the RMH all day on Sunday. I have several videos that are uploading. Basically we discovered that the heat riser (the tall part) needs to be taller in order for the burn chamber to draw. Not to worry, because we were planning on a total height of 40" for the riser. The barrel that will go over the riser will allow the heat to be collected in the thermal mass.

And just for fun, here is a picture of a baby cantaloupe from the garden.

Man that is a LOT of rain. Wish we had gotten some.

I had no idea what all went into building a greenhouse. I thought you just snap it together and that's it! I think I'll be setting up a grow area in my basement now instead!

Lots to report. Making the big push to complete the GH by August 4 (the end of my vacation). I have learned how to lay brick and the rocket mass heater is coming along.

We have lights! Found some fantastic outdoor lights that are much better than the ugly security spot lights.

This week we plan to install the swamp cooler frame and finish the electrical. Once that is done, we can finish the thermal mass and then start building the shelves.

The panels will go in last because of the heat. We want the swamp cooler and exhaust fan to be working before the panel installation. It's coming together!

We are starting to get into the fun stuff for the greenhouse! The customized upgrades that make all of the sweat equity worthwhile.

Yesterday we installed the swamp cooler. After all of the other hard labor, we were happily surprised that it was easy to install and started to crank out cool humidified air immediately.

I spruced up around the back of the GH just to make it easier to walk around. Gravel is so much nicer than mud when it rains.

Today is a bit of a rest day from labor. Hubby is helping our neighbor change his brakes. I'm thinking that I will pull out the orchids and check for bugs. It is always good to do that every now and again.
