Aquafogger Info Needed - Orchid Board

For those that use the JayBird Aquafoggers in your greenhouse, I'd like to hear your opinions on them, please.

Do they get the plants wet? Do they cool as well as humidify? Which one do you use?

They are very expensive, I want to get it right the firt time!!

Any info or advice would be much appreciated!

Hi Debs,

I don't know if my aqua foger is exactly the same as your but I have an Aquafogger 400 . here is where I purchased it from. Aquafog We have a 14' x 18' greenhouse that is attached to our sunrooom (see photos, it is the the smaller section on the left). The unit hads worked very well, and I have had only one problem with the system clogging. It took me about an hour to clean.

There is very minotr "spitting" from the front of the unit, but I aim it toward a aisle, and it is not a problem. Hope this helps. Feel free to contact me if you have any more specific questions.

Your attached greenhouse is really pretty!!! Plants look happy, too.

I did bite the bullet and get the AquaFog fan. For a while I thought I was really going to be sorry. It either drowned everything or put out no fog.

There was a continuous drip..drip that would hit the blades and splatter water everywhere. Even turning it towards the aisle wasn't totally satisfactory since the drip was water that wasn't being 'foggerized.'

I don't know if it was clogged or not but it did finally begin working right. I tilted it a bit backwards and that helped some, too.

Hi,
This year I decided to go with the hydrofogger ( hydrofogger.com) for my new greenhouse. I could'nt be happier. I also installed the humidistat in the front. It is like a cloud fog-the best I've seen and there is no loud noise or 'spitting' of water. A built in little float valve keeps the water level constant.

Hi,
All foggers work best with water that has a low mineral content. I use my RO water and it works fine. If your water is very hard you will have white mineral dust. Lemon juice takes it off the leaves. It is a good excuse to get an RO unit for watering, then use it for misting as well. Your plants will love it.

I have a fogger I got from Charleys Greenhouse Supply. It has a piece for the top that can be directed so that it can be directed towards certain areas of the greenhouse. I also have a humidistat that goes with it so that the overall humidity doesn't get too high or too low.

My well water in the greenhouse in which it was initially used had a very low mineral content. Yet, after several years of use it still needed to be taken apart (easy to do) and cleaned out because of mineral buildup. In my new greenhouse I am going for a small RO system because of the contaminanats in the well water and worse minerals used to remove the contaminants in the tap water. The outside water (greenhouse included) bypasses the system that puts all the minerals in the water so I will have to see just how bad it is, but I'm not sure if mercury will have an adverse effect on the plants. I was told that an RO system will not be totally effective against this contaminant.

One more thing,you asked about cooling. Just about any of the foggers will work to cool the air under certain circumstances. First, you need to have air movement with thee fog. Second, the outside air cannot be as humid as the air in the greenhouse. Humidity is the key. Because it works by evaporative cooling. If the outside air is extremely humid there is no place for evaporation so it won't work. A lot will depend on where you are and your climate. I live in Southern New Jersey and it works most of the year for me and it can get pretty humid here from time to time in summer.

Just browsing around getting a feel for the site -- I'm new to OrchidBoard. I saw Hardwood's comment about cleaning the mineral spots from leaves with lemon juice. It works fine, but it is kind of expensive unless you have a lemon tree in the yard. I've found a folded paper towel wetted down with some half and half works very well, polishes the leaves and is a really cheap alternative.
