I've spent the day doing half lap joints/check in joints on the main beams and also the roofing beams. Tools I use are a 90 degree square, spirit level, circular saw, wood chisels, hand saw and a file. I marked out the cuts to be made on the main beams, in my case 45mm wide by 70mm deep. Ran the circular saw over the mark and a few extra cuts in between. The extras are for the chisel. I then finished off the hand saw. The pieces are then easily chiseled out and with file I just smooth it over. I check the cuts with the spirit level and if needed go a bit harder with the file. I then mount the roofing beams into the cuts and then run a pencil trace onto roofing beam around the cuts made on the main beam. This ensures that the cuts will mirror each other when inlaid. I then make the cuts into the roofing beams.

Hasn't stopped raining since last post...good thing I managed to get the lawn mowed beforehand as the yard looks like an aquatic centre at the moment. Haven't been able to progress the shade house though. Well i have capped off the post holes with extra cement and prepared support beams but that's about it. Fingers crossed for the rain to clear off by morning.

Roof beams are now in place. I have additionally locked them off with an M12 bolt for extra stability.

I'm yet to install my 45deg supports which I'll probably do tomorrow. Anyway, pictures will tell the story.....

PS, Borrowed some trestles from my neighbour!

The timber frame is now complete!! Yay for me......

The 45 degree supports are a metre long and are fixed by a combination of batten screws and M10 bolts.

The side rails like the other beams have been lap jointed into place.

I will now wait for some good weather before painting the timber. I then need to to do the shade cloth (I was going to go poly carb sheets but I'll try 60-70% cloth first.)

Underneath I'm going to then fix light gauge wire mesh. primarily this is for my hanging vandas but will have the added bonus of providing more rigidity to the structure.

I also need to work the ground level in terms of drainage and coverings.

So still quite a bit of work to do........

So I've stained and waterproofed the timber today using Cabots Aquadeck (Merbau). I cheated a little bit and used a mains powered spray gun...saved a stack of time!
