Default joining the Greenhouse growers ranks, hail storm got me!!

I lost the 'I need a greenhouse' battle today. I got hit with 60 mph winds and 6 inches of quarter sized hail. Trashed all my plants on the deck. Just ordered a Snap and Grow 6 x 8 starter greenhouse. Its kind of cheesy and I dont like the clear poly sheets but I can cover it up. Got a shade cloth for it already. I hope its not torn up too as it had about 50 lbs of ice that stretched it nicely out of shape.
Oh well I got to move my shade house over to the other side of the patio. I hope it gets here like wednsday next week so I can have a few days off to put it together. My poor plants have had the misfortune of me liking them. I will do better. No more ice and no more 60 mph wind tearing them up. Growing these plants out of doors requires a greenhouse is my final opinion. You can do as one wishes and try to do good by them but they need protection from the elements regardless of how you want to grow your orchids. Consistency is the key to growing nice blooming orchids.

It's a very pretty g/h, actually. What sort of cooling system are you planning on using?

I'm planning on a g/h in my future so I've been in the info gathering phase for the past 2+ years. Picking peoples' brains on the equipment and whatnot they are using for heating and cooling. I know how hot and humid Houston can get so I'm curious as to what kind of system you're thinking about using.

Oh no! So sorry about your nice deck setup and the orchids.

A greenhouse will certainly help but it creates a whole different set of worries too.

Have fun.

Sorry to hear of your hailstorm. I am reminded why I grew my orchids on the porch in year's past and not exposed like last year. Last year was a very calm summer with only one tornado warning, one hailstorm, one didieri bloom lost.
Hope your greenhouse works well for you. I worked in a greenhouse for a summer and they do get very hot, even with outside temps in the seventies. The unvented greenhouse, for rooting the cuttings, was like a sauna with the heat turned up all the way. Cooling is definitely a must if you want to hang out with your plants in a pleasant manner.

I really like this greenhouse! Looks great!

I got myself a greenhouse in November and I'm still trying to tweak the conditions and install the misting system in a way that keep the catts dry and the vandas wet and all that. Find it's more challenging than I thought it would be, but at the same time I finally got a place for the orchids where I've got no problems with too low humidity.

Agree with Leafmite though, they do get bloody hot.

I had it looking purty good in my eyes..here it is before....

after..

The orchid lords work in mysterious ways..they clean up what sometimes we can not ..I get a whole new herd of plants now too!!

Im already planning on a small AC unit, fans, misters and what else I need.. There I go mixing water and electricity again.

What can ya say
