Default It is official,

It is official, the old shadehouse that I brought with me to my new house is history. It was leaking like a sieve and my son had patched the fiberglass roof several times. They came over yesterday and tore it down.
So, everything is crammed on to the patio. I have no room to move. It had to happen. I could not get anything to dry out over the past weeks of a monsoon of rain that lasted days. I hope to have a new structure up in the next month or so. One I can close up over winter. I'm still trying to decide exactly what I want. I've scoured the internet for ideas...and haven't hit on anything that I want to look at for the 10 years.
For now, I will have to put up with a big giant mess.

You have some great orchids there. Obviously very well cared for. I'm sorry to hear about the shade house. Maybe this is an opportunity to build a new and improved version. In any case good luck with the project. Enjoy your 4th of July weekend even though there isn't much room for a barbeque with all those orchids.

So, Are you looking to stay with a shadehouse or are you going to go to a greenhouse?

I will be glad to take care of those 'homeless' vandas in Pacific Northwest. I bet they will like bit cooler weather.

I like how the patio looks with all the plants, but guess it doesn't leave much room for people that way

your plants all look so happy! I hope they have a new home soon!

Wow!! I'm sorry to hear about the shadehouse.

I thought greenhouses were a no-no in Florida?

Best thing in Florida, keep it simply, a shadehouse is fairly cheap and if it blows away little damage done.
If you're using a lot of hydroton, rain doesn't seem to do much damage. I have a fiberglass area with open sides that I have a real hard time keeping things moist, a roll of plastic works for winter time.
Good Luck

Your plants are all lovely and really healthy looking. I had to laugh when I saw that 3 of them even took over your outdoor sofa! Somthing I would do
I like the looks of your vandas, but they frighten me a litttle! ( I actually like the little baskets their grown in as much as the plants ) I may have to try a mini someday! Anyhow, I wish you the very best of luck with the new project. Wish I had room in the yard for a small shadehouse, but I have to do with hanging from the pindo plam or growith on the lanai. What part of FL are you in?
OK, I checked your growth zone, then a map and I see!
Cheers,
Tony

You can build one yourself for not too much money. See mine.

http://www.orchidboard.com/community...e-project.html

We just used rolls of porch screen (the plastic kind) to cover the outside. We replaced the roof of visqueen last fall with corrugated plastic panels that you get at The Home Depot or Lowes. Screwed them in with big roof washers to prevent leaking.
