Default Input On Side Yard

The side yard of my house is deep. About 12 foot from the house to the privacy fence. It is wasted space, really. I've planted but, it is still wasted. It has a great micro-climate during the winter. Summer might be different for orchids. I worry about no air circulation. I would really like to install a long shade house of sorts. Running the length of the house. Any input would be appreciated.

It sounds a good idea. I have a similar (probably smaller) waisted space between my house and my neighbours and I put a small greenhouse in it. It doesn't feel like wasted space any more and I have somewhere to keep orchids

I have the oposite air flow problem, it can get really windy between the two houses. I would guess that there is always some air flow in your Side Yard, if not then fitting power so you can put a fan or two out there might be a simple solution.

P.S. I love your avatar. I've just realised recognise it and I've been there.

Rosie, Did you do a full on greenhouse or a shadehouse? Would you mind posting a picture? I've just run out of room everywhere and this would be so great if I could move a lot over to the side.

And I love the avatar, as well. I wish I been there

You should have a look at what Jkelee (no longer active here) did for her orchids. She made a 'chid hotel' along the fence in her yard, and she lives somewhere in FL. I'm looking for threads with pics of it.

Camille, That is pretty much what I had in mind. It is great to actually see it. While Jkelee put her's against the fence I'm thinking of putting mine against the house. I haven't completely made that decision...but that is where I think I'm going.
I have no room left and have to find another avenue.
I appreciate you looking for the threads and posting them.

Cathy

Mine was a greenhouse, but a small one (6' x 6')

I don't have any pictures online at the momment. I intended to post some when I put it up this time last year but never did.

Mine is probably not the same as you have in mind, but I do think that using a wasted space for something of this type is a very good idea.

I agree on the wasted space. I've tried to fill mine with guavas and few carambola. Plants that get hurt in winter in this part of hillsborough county.
I think this sort of 1/2 a slathouse will be prefect
