Default greenhouse progress report

Hi guys
The foundation was poured yesterday. The contractor did a nice job with a smooth finish. My only complaint is that it was supposed to be coffee color. It is a southwestern pink/coral color. The contractor tried to tone it down as much as he could. Still pink. Yikes. He says we can go for a pentrating stain. Anyway, that is what we will do I think. The drain is in and the foundation for the sidewalls is ready, after everything cures. (Pentrating stain sounds like a laundry nightmare, doesn't it?) Carol

I don't think our planning is quite so rigorous - we can erect one storey green houses without permission, I believe. I am looking forward to seeing your pictures, Carol - and glad your other half is recovered from hurting his back.

Well Hedge, since this is attached to the house, that changes the rules here. If it were free standing, it wouldn't need a building permit in my city. DH took out the inner wall of the house today. So now the window will be removed and a sliding glass door will be put in. (Just got word that it has arrived at local building supply.) Slider won't stick out into the house. Not as lovely as french doors, but less of a space problem. Carol

The knee wall is done. the main beam below the rafters of the house is installed. The sliding glass door allowing access to the house is done, mostly anyway. The latch isn't working yet. Now comes the frame and glass. Pictures tomorrow if I remember. Carol

got a great place for your orchids here in our country got no place for a greenhouse for growing orchids, mostly houses are built apartment styles, only the rich and able can have those greenhouse as they have an area to accomodate a greenhouse. me i'm growing it on the front porch of my house but still there is a little place for my hobby

Boyong at least your climate is more favorable for growing outdoors. Mine would freeze their little pseudobulbs off here in the winter if they were outdoors. I suppose you probably hang some of your orchids to save space too.
We are almost ready to start putting up the framework for the glass. A gutter has to be constructed for the roof adjacent to the greenhouse. Carol

It's looking really good, Carol, very solid construction going on. Is your house timber framed or have you lined the rear wall for insulation purposes?

My poor little lean to greenhouse is just aluminium frame work attached to a wooden base rail with all glass sides and roof. I have no access directly from the house, I have to go outdoors to check up on it and I really envy you your inner door. Unfortunately my house doesn't have the right shape for an interior angle fill in.

I assume that is your hard working other half on the ladder

That is my hard working other half on the ladder. At the moment he is smearing denatured alcohol on the flashing so he can caulk it. My house is timber framed. DH had to get into the wall to place a vent for the plumbing, and to put the pipes in there too. There was a window where we put the sliding glass door, same size, just all the way to the floor for the door. Without a door there is more room for orchids Hedge! Gotta look on the bright side.....Carol

that is the only advantage here, but sometimes we do get torrential rains some even bring floods though.

yes most of my orchids are hanging not to save space but to accomodate more orchids
