Smile How to treat Algae in Mister Reservoir

Well last summer in my greenhouse I had a 22 quart reservoir for my misting system. It works great but with the heat in the greenhouse lots of algae began growing in the bucket and I fear it might plug up the system. What can I use to keep it at bay without hurting the orchids?

Also I am afraid to have the mister on to long and get the Phal crowns full of water. How do the big Phal growers water those big greenhouses full of Phals?

Getting ready to put the chids back in the greenhouse...

Thanks Sheridan

Algae grows where there is light, water, and nutrition. As the last two are uncontrollable (OK, you could use RO for misting), the trick will be to keep light away from the tank.

If you're using the misting for humidity enhancement, just make sure there are no plants under the spray pattern. My Hydrofogger, for example, propels the droplets down the center aisle of the GH.

Thumbs up

Thanks Dounoharm and Ray for the comments. I will make sure the misting heads are directed to the center aisle. It works very well otherwise.

There are a lot of people who just try their best of keep the algae out. I would say that Ray has got the basics right over here. Just look at the reason and you get the solution. Here just by controlling the light you could get rid of algae, sounds pretty simple, isn't it? I think that this is something that we could try at the other places too protecting the orchids.

I have my misters under the benches. It doesn't get the plants wet and keeps the humidity at least 60% with a humidistat.
