I grow catts and phals in my GH. I have the day temps set at 75 deg and nights at 64 deg. My question has to do with day temps and cloudy days. Should I just have a minimum temp set on the thermostat only and let the sun warm the GH or do I leave the setup the way it is so the phals arent chilled on a cloudy day. The problem with letting the sun do the work of heating the GH is that a couple of hours after the sun starts to heat the GH it gets blocked, for about twenty min by a nieghbors tree, then hits the Gh again. So my main concern is keeping temps constant. Any thoughts on this subject. Thanks
Don't know where "home" is and it really doesn't make much difference....just my curiosity. My GH temps fluctuate all the time and I don't see much of a problem. I try to keep an average day of about 70 and nites about 58 to 64....all depends how much energy I have at the end of the day to go out and adjust the thermostat. I'm growing catts, phals, paphs, phrgs, cymb, and a small number of oncidium alliance stuff.
I keep my thermostat at 60 which means the temps go from 60-62. It never gets adjusted even when the days, and days, and days of low gray clouds hang on all day.
If the sun is out, the temps go higher but I don't readjust the heat when the sun is MIA.
I grow many catts and phals plus lots of other things. The plants do great.
I grow catts, phals, phrags, and a lot of misc. orchids in the gh. I keep the low temp set at 58 which means it goes from 58 to 62. I don't control the daytime temps but let the sun heat it up if it is out. I do watch for the temps to get above 85 though and at that point start looking at a little ventilation. That usually doesn't happen until March at which point I put on the shade cloth. I was maintaining the night temps between 54 and 58 and began to have bug problems so raised the temp. My plants seem to be doing well. I have lots of spikes and new growth beginning. Betty
