Every time I watch the news (okay, actually the weather), I think of your greenhouse. Have you been able to dig out and do anything with it yet?
When you can find it, send more photos and STAY WARM!

Hi Utah, well the weather here has been cold and snowy BUT it was 40 today and the trees are dripping all over the place. We were supposed to get an additional 4-6 inches of snow tonight and Christmas Day. So far nothing mostly wet snow and light rain. The snow here is not getting wet and slushy and we are supposed to get scatterd flurries until Monday.
I haven't been out to the GH since the day it arrived and its killing me. I have so much to do. The first day when its over 45 I will be setting up a heater in there so I can dig out the center and put the pavers down.
From that point on it will be removing some of the dirt under the benches and putting the weed cloth and wire cloth down then gravel. I want to test the heating system for a week while I work in there and see how easy or hard it will be to keep the GH at 60 at night. Got some wiring to do but that's not a problem. I'll keep you all informed with lots of as I get it in working order.
Thanks for your interest.
Have a Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas Sheridan and all, I am just getting ready to go out to shovel but thought I would make a suggestion. I have a remote temp and humidity device in my GH but have just purchased one with an alarm. After this spat of cold weather(we are still getting snow and 20 degree highs) I decided I needed my sleep. I have been waking up numerous times each night to check the temp. Now I will be a little more secure about sleeping. There is a device which also calls your cell phone if the temp drops below or above your parameters.
I hope you get that warmer weather soon so you can get going on the set up. Take care and have a Merry HO HO. Betty

Good Morning Betty and Merry Christmas,,,,,
That alarm you just bought was it expensive? I don't think that would work for me cause we can't get cell service down here in the canyon. We have to go up on top of the hill for cell service. Can you make it call you land line??? If so I may have to do that. I can't sleep now as it is and there is nothing in the GH
Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas have a wonderful day.

The one I bought does not call my phone, it only alarms in the house. It was 55.00 from Charlies. There is one that you can program to call several numbers and I will have to send you the info later as I will need to find the info. We are retired and home most of the time, so I didn't want to spend the money on the one that dials.
I'll send you the info when I find it again. Betty

Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone! Hope it warms up soon so you can get to work on that greenhouse Ranchnanny. I've been sitting inside stewing and grumbling at my own snow because it's keeping me from weeding and the fall clean-up that my parents missed while I was at school. On the plus side I did get an Aerogarden for my dorm room (I know, no use for orchids, unfortunately) and my parents are weakening ever more towards the idea of getting a greenhouse or sunroom. Hope you get the chance to show us your progress, you know, once you're able to make some progress!

Hey There Evan, as soon as I can get out there I will take photo's of the work in progress. Good thing our ground here is quick draining it has lots of volcanic matter in it. The ground doesn't actually get muddy but it does get very soft then within a day or two its hard as a rock.

Sheridan, This is the response by Ray on another thread. I don't remember exactly where I found it but did copy it so here is the info on alarms that call your phone. Betty
(I have an old 1114 (you can usually find them on eBay), which is a 4-port, line-capturing model (if someone is using the phone line, it kills the connection and then dials). As nobody is usually here when I'm not, I would not have paid extra for it - I thought I was getting an 1104.
It has built-in power-outage and noise sensors (worked great when we were out-of-town and my son had a big party) that don't occupy the connectors.
I don't bother with humidity, but have a Thermalarm in the GH, which is connected to an X10 Powerflash unit plugged into an enclosed power receptacle. When the upper- or lower temp limit is reached, the X10 module sends a signal over my buried power lines to an X10 universal module that is plugged into the wall and connected to the Sensaphone in my home office.
I have three numbers programmed into the unit - home (to wake me up in the middle of the night), office, and cell phone. There is a 4th slot, and if I know a number where I'll be, I'll sometimes enter it. (I forgot to remove my mother-in-law's number once, and she got calls for several weeks whenever we vacuumed the room!)
In an alarm situation, it first "speaks" "alarm condition 1 exists" from the unit, and will try 10 times for an acknowledgment (entering a PIN in the keypad). If that doesn't happen, it calls the first number 10 times (awaiting telephone keypad entry), then the second, and so-on.
Setting up the unit itself is no issue whatsoever, and it has helped me in two crucial situations - once when the propane folks skipped a week one winter, and once when a squirrel decided to short the overhead lines on a 100°F day, killing all power and shutting down my fogger, fans, and ventilation shutters.

Fast draining soil, huh? Lucky you, Sheridan. My area apparently got the clay from the volcanic mudflows, so we've got puddles from the melting snow and some spots will be soggy until summer. It actually got up to 43 degrees F today! Hope you're getting a similar warm-up!
