Shadytrake, I have been posting pictures under the title GREENHOUSE GUESSWORK. Its still a work in progress not many blooms but new growth etc. Biggest problem was the s/h drying out so fast and leaves burning. I have since put up shade cloth inside but before it gets hotter shade cloth will be put over the outside. So many of my chids are young and have not become blooming size as yet. I keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks so much for your interest.
Sheridan

Wowsers! Great dendro there, Sheridan! I'm assuming the last picture is the name of it?

Guess I'll have to have a look at the greenhouse guesswork thread to see what else you've been up to.

I'm thinking of trying S/H myself. How do you have yours set up? Are they in single pots with holes part-way up the sides, or do you have a double pot system? Just trying to figure out the easiest and best way to set things up for myself. Thanks!

Hi Evan, glad you like my huge Den. I was so surprised when they arrived they were so big. I had no idea.
My chids in s/h are in individual clear pots with 2 small holes about 1 inch from the bottom. I use clear deli containers or for smaller chids I use small clear plastic glasses or any plastic bottle. Most are doing alright but a few I changed back to bark.
Here are some photo's.

Hey Sheridan! Isn't it nice when people surprise you with better than expected plants? So wonderful!

Thanks for showing me some of your S/H chids! I'm glad the containers can be made from such easy, cheap materials. I think that's how I'm going to try S/H to start with. I have a doritis that has been merely existing in water culture for a while, but it has lots of little root nubbins that I've been told are perfect for switching to S/H. That's why I was curious about your set-up. And as I see more S/H plants, I'm liking the visibility of the roots, the clean look, and the practice in general more and more!

Evan just so you know they won't stay that way nice and clear if they get alot of light. Algae will grow in the containers. Most of mine have algae since they have been in the GH.

Betty, thanks for the heads up but I already have a commitment that weekend. Darn I would love to drive over the hill.

Oh, well. I don't mind algae. There's lots of it with my water culture orchids.

And isn't it a shame to miss the orchid show in Portland? I can't make it either, because I'm starting work that weekend. Mother's Day weekend is a busy time at a nursery! At least I'll be around plants, even if they aren't orchids!

Evan I think working in a Garden Nursery would be a really cool job. Maybe we can all meet next year
at the Portland Orchid Show. What fun that would be.
