Well I got started on my mini greenhouse. Had to get my other chores finished first before I could play.
Originally I was going to use some of the twin wall polycarbonate for glazing but in small quantities crating and shipping put the cost way out of sight.
What to do, what to do?
I was poking around the local Habitat for Humanity Store looking for old windows I could use when I stumbled onto a whole crate of sheet glass. Quarter inch thick tempered glass. A little measuring and figuring and a new design slowly began to emerge.
The glass sheets were perfect size at 22-1/4 x 34-1/4 inches after adding a frame to fit my 6 ft wide opening. Since I can't cut the tempered glass I'll have to cut some small pieces to fill in a few gaps on the end walls and along back edge of the roof.
Today I picked up some nice redwood 2 x 4's and spent the afternoon making parts and sawdust in my shop.
Over the weekend I got the excavation outside my shop door all finished and just waiting for the framework to be completed.
Since the glass size dictated most of the design I going to carry the glass down to within a few inches of the ground. The glass below bench level will be insulated in the winter with 2 inch styrofoam. I'm thinking of insulating the north end wall with 3/4 inch foil faced foam and the rest of the glass with bubble wrap to get me up to about R2. On real cold nights I might even add some thick foam panels to the roof, south and east facing glass.
