Converting screened gazebo to greenhouse
Default Converting screened gazebo to greenhouse

Aloha! Or should I say "Howdy." I've been gone from the OB for some time. After the death of my husband in November, I decided to move from Kona back to Texas to rejoin family. Picked a great time - early March, and arrived just in time at the start of the pandemic. Sadly, I had to part with most of my collection (and my koi). I shipped back about 80 orchids, mostly divisions of cattleyas, and other favorites.

I was very lucky to find the perfect house, with a lath covered patio and 12 x 14 freestanding gazebo, which I am converting into a fully functioning greenhouse. Below are a few pictures of the progress so far. The entire roof was removed and is being replaced with twinwall. The builder created what he calls the plenum on top of the hip roof, which has 4 temperature-controlled vents for ventilation. The screened windows will be replaced with sliding glass windows. The flooring is trex-type planking. I will have a swamp cooler and greenhouse heater and fans, and aluminum benching, sink, and running water. I am fortunate that the gazebo, which housed a hot tub, has 110 and 220 wiring already. The structure is mostly shaded by a large oak next to it, but at some times during the day there is full sun, so will need some shading.

Here is the original structure:
