I built my own freestanding GH on long island where the temps get into the low teens occasionally, and sometimes below zero. First of all it was wood. Then the north wall was wooden with insulation. I hung a lot of plants on it. I used propane with two tanks and an automatic regulator which switches from one tank to the other when one runs dry. It's seamless. It also throws up a flag indicating it switched and one tank needs filling.
I made it through many heavy snow storms with 3+ feet of snow on the ground. I used polycarbonate panels for the light transmission and had zero problems. Grew orchids exclusively with zero problems. I designed and built this myself when I was younger. One solid piece of advice, figure out the largest size you can afford, then double it! You'll thank me later.
