We call it 'ag pipe or agricultural pipe' here. It a black bendable pipe with slots to allow water to enter.
I will qualify my comments below by saying hubby is a plumber.
When we had this house built, due to the slope on the land some of the garden ended up being higher than the house, at the highest 1200mm (4 feet) higher than the house.
We built retaining walls, behind the wall is construction plastic with the ag pipe wrapped in geofabric (this stops a lot of fine sand and mud from blocking the slots in the pipe)the wrapped pipe is surrounded with a medium size gravel. This has worked very well, any water from the garden reaches the plastic, moves down through the gravel is wicked away by the pipe.
At house level and on the patio side of the retaining wall we made a stormwater drain that connected the downpipes on the house and connected this to stormwater 'ring' drain that runs across the back and down 2 sides of the house and out to the street.
Just the normal stormwater pipe with a grate every 4 or 5 metres to ensure the paving would stay water free.
After the stormwater was done and prior to laying the paving we laid medium gravel, following by paving sand, then the final paving.
We were unable to get the wall/drainage work finished before the first winter so we had a unwanted 'water feature' 😁 for some time but at least the channels we had dug for the stormwater pipework helped to drain the block.
We are now into our third year here and we have a well drained garden and dry paving.
The retaining wall is made from wooden sleepers. There is no dampness on the wall due to the plastic sheeting and after rain the wall dries very quickly.
In really hot weather I used to wet the paving to add humidity for the orchids. Due to the drains I couldn't get standing water but the sand underneath did help with humidity.
I've since had a
misting system installed.
