I seem to do OK with phalaenopsis-types so I'm keeping my eye out for them. There are some real bargains out there at the moment as shops try to move their surplus Xmas stock and I found a Sa-Nook Polar Fire yesterday on offer at £4.00 instead of £14. It had been knocked out of its pot and the spike had snapped but the canes were plump so I bought it. I repotted it straight away and was surprised and delighted to find that the roots were in amazingly good condition considering the compacted state of the remaining compost. I had to remove chunks of coconut husk from the centre but there were new roots amongst it and more emerging.

Today I had a few minutes to spare as I waited for a bus and browsed a convenience store at the bus station. They had a few Sa-Nook orchids available, including Thailand Black, a variety I've been lusting after for ages but the cheapest I could find on-line was £30 for two. This was £5.99 and is in much better condition than the Polar Fire. The roots are right through the pot and the two large spikes both have buds still to open. Better still, there's a third spike emerging from a smaller cane. I'm a lucky boy!

Wow, those are some real bargains! I have three Sa-Nook hybrids and love them - Blue Happiness, Polar Fire and a third unidentified that looks very much like your Thailand Black. Sadly, they're difficult to find in my area, and when I do come across them, they often have hardly any roots!
