Should I get it?
Hi everyone, just spotted a spectacular dendrobium/phal (I think) at the grocery store last night. Didn't get it. Honestly, to me, it is the most beautiful thing I have seen and has been all I have been thinking about. I could get it on my lunch hour, if it is still there, although it is freezing out and I would have to be very careful. All I have are phals at this point. My sister said the den/phals like similar growing conditions as the phals and she thinks I would be fine.
Should I get it?!

They like to be warm all year. They need more light than Phals. If you can provide winter warmth, go ahead. Ask the store to wrap the entire plant in multiple paper shopping bags for the trip to the car and into the house.

Mine grew well with my phals. I ultimately moved them due to space. If you love it and it makes your heart sing, buy it. But do keep it warm.

This right here would make me say yes, you should get it! But only if you think you can meet its needs as outlined by ES and Carol above.
Life is short. If it would bring you pleasure, and if you have the space, the money, the time and ability to meet its needs, why not add it to the family.

Cheri and Gingersmommy, I collect a few antiques, mostly vases. I have learned not to just collect, I collect what makes me smile. I'm hijacking this thread to show you this. He makes my heart smile. Go get that 'chid, girl!

Take a trash bag with you. Put the plant in and trap a bunch of warm air in the bag to protect the plant. Standard procedure with parrots.

Beautiful! I love "antiques" too. I don't know what are actually antiques, but I love old things and love going to antique places or estate shops and looking for treasures (things that speak to me). Craigs List and eBay have been good to me and I have gotten a ton of nice things from there.
I am going after work to get the orchid. Fingers crossed that it is still there. If so, I will send a pic.
Thank you!

Hi friends,
Here is the orchid I was obsessing about. No regrets; love it! Come to find out, it is a den. (not a den./phal). Now I'm in trouble and will have to research how to take care of it. Can someone tell me which type it is (I-VI). I will research on the board once I know which type it is. I love it and and going to do my best to give it what it needs. Thanks!

Den-phal is a Dendrobium (not related to Phals) It gets the name because the flower looks (or looked to somebody) a bit like a Phalaenopsis. It does grow under the same conditions except for preferring somewhat more light than a Phal.
I look forward to seeing the photo!
