Default Dendrobium lichenastrum var prenticei

Dendrobiums that I grow are miniatures, I like to call them Drockrillia because I like the name better. I have a few of these, most are in my Exo Terra and doing well.

This one is the lichenastrum var prenticei, looks much different than my lichenastrum with its flat little roundish leaves. The var prenticei has long terete leaves.

The species is native to Australia, grows cool to hot in bright light. They do not like to dry out completely and grow best mounted also appreciate humidity and air movement. In the winter it’s best to hold off on fertilizer and let them just slightly dry between waterings. I find them easy to grow.

This plant was an eBay purchase in November. It was potted and when it arrived it was spilled out of its pot and pretty roughed up, the box was squashed. I decided to mount it and added a pinch of moss to the wood, just at the roots. I’ve had it recouping in my greenhouse shelf and I now see new growth and new roots! I think it’s going to be fine, it is a monster and could never fit in my terrarium.

The tag for this plant reads, Dendrobium lichenastrum var prenticei “Kathleen’s Classical Ambiance “

SaraJean and Shannon, thank you! These Australian dendrobium are very succulent looking. They really do not like to dry out and they appreciate humidity so they are great in a terrarium. This one happens to be too large for my terrarium, much larger than my others but it is just so cool! I can’t wait until it flowers.

That's a really interesting looking plant. It looks a lot like Leptotes bicolor, which also has succulent, terete leaves and a similarly pendulous growth habit.

Your plant looks very healthy, in spite of its journey through the postal service. It will be interesting to see how it rebounds and (hopefully) blooms. Good luck.

Mine doesn't grow profusely, but it's fine not in a terrarium, among the other orchids, with watering every 1-7 days. It blooms every now and then. I got it from Andy's.

A year or so late here. Me too. I'd think many times before putting them into the 'dendrobium' category. To me, it's like a cymbidium being called a cattleya.
